The kids were so excited to get back into garden club this term, so much so that we ran over time every class as they didn't want to finish. Exciting sessions saw a giant delivery of compost that was barrowed into the new garden beds and our very special Vegepod. Students harvested lettuces, leeks, red onions and fennel to take home. Beds were weeded to make way for the new compost and get ready for summer plantings with all the old veggie's given to the chooks. The coop was given a good clean out and the kids really enjoyed time in the coop playing with the chickens. Ladybugs were spotted with excitement and snails collected to be fed to the chooks. Seeds were saved from the broccoli for another season of planting and plants were nurtured to get ready for another seed saving collection. A great first week of being back in the garden.

Bakers Delight Chelsea helped make Soup Day a huge success by giving every student a roll to dip into their soup. Students were asked to donate a mug to the kitchen so that the kitchen would become more sustainable.Autumn days bring time for lots of nature play, seed planting, harvesting, cooking and eating. It's the last week of Garden Club for Term 1! To celebrate, we have made either pizza or pasta, depending on the weather! Passata sauce was made a few weeks ago from all our beautiful tomatoes, and basil, garlic, rosemary, rocket and capsicums were used from the garden. As usual, Gluten free and Dairy free options were available. Several students were excited to taste capsicum for the first time, because as we know, growing, nurturing and harvesting your own produce has these magical benefits! There were lots of "I don't like passata" or "I don't like tomatoes" This quickly changed after tasting, and students were lining up for seconds. We are very proud of kids working together in teams to make these delicious dishes. We look forward to the $20,000 kitchen we won being installed so we can create bigger and better things!!
Who is free tomorrow afternoon?? The amazing Daisy Downs is delivering us 2 cubic metres of Veggie mix to top our beds up between 11-1pm. So why not drop in before assembly and get grubby with the kids and shovel some dirt! The sooner its in, the sooner we can plant our winter crops! Three cheers for Daisy's!! Chat to Greg if you need Garden Supplies at home! Last week another road trip was in order! Peter from Scottsburn Nurseries kindly donated 10 trays of seedlings every season to our school garden. Super excited to get these Austum seedlings into the veggie patches with the kids! Victorian School Garden Awards granted us a winning voucher late last year for our garden so we headed off to Gardenworld to get some native compost to plant out the native wall that has slowly taken shape around the Asian Hut. At the last Bonbeach Farmers Market we purchased some Native Westringa from Geoff who comes down from Somerville Plant Nursery.
The Garden Club students have been busy gutting and preparing beds with school made compost ready for the seedlings to go in over the next week. We were also lucky enough to have another donation form Owen and Breanna's grandma who gave us trays of seedlings also. It's going to be an exciting season in the garden with, purple beans, purple peas, purple broccoli, purple cauliflower, purple carrots, alongside, lettuce, snowpeas, bok choi, radishes and butter beans. Andy has quite rightfully names the patch "purple paradise" and we have had some great suggestions with what to cook up in our new $20,000 kitchen from the Good Guys!! We are so excited to have joined Melbourne Water’s network of Community Rain Readers. Melbourne Water currently maintains a network of about 550 rain gauges across metropolitan and rural areas operated on a voluntary basis by local residents, bowling clubs, golf clubs etc.
Bonbeach Primary is the FIRST SCHOOL on board, so term one, we will need some Greenthumbs to become "rain gauge readers" - a very important role within our garden program! THANK YOU to all the School and Kinder families who volunteered their time to look after the school garden and chooks over the holidays. Thanks for your photo updates, it looks like the chooks were spoiled in the hot weather with special treats, and you all were were rewarded with amazing produce! We hope you enjoyed the experience.
