Pumpkin, Potato and Leek SOUP DAY was a huge success with lots of kids coming back for seconds or trying for the first time! A HUGE THANK YOU to Rosa, Belinda, Mandy, Lisa, Michelle, Emma and a special thanks to the amazing Theresa for making today's soup kitchen the success it was!
Pumpkin seedlings were donated by a regular sponsor, Scotsburn Nurseries and seed potatoes were donated by The Plant Shop! and without these amazing sponsors, the garden would not exist, so once again, thankyou to these amazing people. Pumpkins, Potatoes and Leeks were harvested from the garden and Australia's Own Organic Vegetable Stock used, keeping our kitchen allergy free. Zero waste was achieved with all waste being composted & pumpkin seeds saved for the next plantings. The kids planted a pea seed in their empty sugarcane cup (hopefully they remembered to bring them home). We would love to see some results once they start growing, plant them at home or bring them back to the garden Pumpkin seeds were ashed, dried and saved for next seasons plantings! We also had a few Members of Parliament come & join in the Soup Day & they were very impressed knowing that the kids had grown the veggies, made soup & recycled the waste to be used again. Best of all the kids knew they were eating pumpkins, potatoes and leeks they had planted from seeds & cared for. Soup Day was sponsored by Going Green Solutions. Jade and Amy Students comments: As I am on the Environment Team, I thought it was a fantastic idea to recycle the sugar cane cups & bamboo spoons to use for potting the pea seeds - Bliss. The soup was amazing. Keep on cooking greenthumbs! By Ryan "I think the soup was really yummie and healthy, and thank you for making it"- Charlotte "I went back for more as it had a beautiful taste" -Ben Grace - "I tried to bite the cup to see if it tasted like sugar, but it didn't taste like anything. The soup tasted much better!" The cup came home with bite marks all around the top... Ruby said "it was really good soup, the best bit was planting in the sugar cup and now watching it grow !" Thanks green thumbs ! Soup Kitchen first week back! Pumpkin, Potato & Leek Soup will be made with our very own school grown organic vegetables! This will be a FREE FOOD DAY available to all students provided by the Enviro Team & Green Thumbs. We were lucky enough to be sponsored for the day with Going Green Solutions providing bio-degradable cups for our soup & we can then use the cups to plant seeds in or put in the compost. The day will be 100% zero waste! more information will be given first day back of term 2. Sponsored by http://www.goinggreensolutions.com.au/ Green Temple Garlic were kind enough to donate all this Garlic! They heard about our pizza oven and toppings we are growing and were delighted to help us out! Earlier in the week, we got an area ready with fresh compost from the worm farm. Today a group of kids eagerly planted the garlic and we also researched how to tell its ready for harvesting! If any families want to give garlic growing at home a crack, contact Green Temple Garlic and they will help you out!
Mr Nosey. Mr Strong. Mr Spikey. We look different, but we taste just as good. Proof that organic vegetables are not perfect. But taste perfect.
Harry planted these beans from seeds, and cares for them on a daily basis. He makes sure they are watered, and also that they are climbing and winding there way to the top! He came up with the idea to mark in texta how much they grow overnight, as it's amazing to see the growth each day! They grow about Xcm every day, and currently measure Xm high! Well above Harry's head!
Rather than using the watering back and fourth to the chickens (the hose doesn't reach), the students found an old hose, and placed the hoses inside each other like an extension. They used watering cans to catch the water runoff and the chickens had fresh water in no time!
