Our school garden is part of our local wetlands area. The areas surrounding us were once swamps and bog lands, making it a perfect place to attract native wildlife and flora. This workshop is being conducted so that we can help our native lands return in part, to the eco system it once was, by introducing local native plants we will be able to invite natural wildlife into our school garden to enjoy, watch and preserve.
To build a Frog Bog we will need:
fish pond (already on site) River pebbles or rocks Aquatic plants
What to do: - find a good level ground for the pond - make sure there are no large over hanging trees to avoid leaf litter dropping in - the pond needs to be partly shaded throughout the day so that the water does not over heat in the sunshine - rinse out the pond ensuring it is clean from dirt and other debris - place 1 or 2 aquatic plants in the pond - now place a range of different sized river rocks and pebbles around the plant pots to hold them firmly in place - place hollowed out logs, large rocks around the pond, you may like to place a long tree log over hanging the pond - fill your pond with water
Now we wait for wildlife to enter our pond, it may take a week or so for the eco-system to start working. As soon as you see little wriggly creatures in the water you will know that it is starting to form. Keep an eye out for frogs! Be careful not to disturb the environment you have created as there may be frogs living amongst the rocks & logs. Frogs will come as the pond fills with wriggly creatures, this is their food and so are the insects that you will find buzzing around it.
Keep your frog bog filled with water at all times, this may be something you need to do with a hose if rainfall is not sufficient. You can keep an eye on rainwater levels by checking the rain gauge which is on the Indonesian Welcome Post
FROG BOG workshop is happening on Wednesday 1st April 9.30 - 12pm Please bring wet weather gear as we a working with water and a snack. Everyone is welcome to come and help build schools new native mini eco- system.
